This was an issue for me on my work PC. The above link had the solution

FUN!!!

1 – Hardware – HP DL380 G5, 3 x 146GB SAS drives in RAID 5
2 – Partition Layout – 50GB System drive, rest for data
3 – How did it go: Very easy, getting it to its first boot is remarkably easy, almost 0 configuration, though i had the benefit of a HP Smart Start CD!

More Soon!

I had a repair job this morning. A laptop was booting up fine, then attempting to login, and was immediately logging back out. Every user was doing this. Even in safe mode

Reverting to “last known good config” was no good

The trail to success started with various articles talking about the userinit key in the registry, and how some spyware protection programs can alter them. There was talk of replacing certain files with userinit.exe, but when i couldnt find said files, i didnt bother with that, but i believed i was on the right route

After a bit more digging i found the following: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/peboot.htm

This is the solution to the problem

In the effort to get to the solution i tried the registry tools in trhe Hirens cd, but only the Offline one would work, and this isnt very intuitive at all.

So BART PE to the rescue. I found that the “userinit” key was not present in the registry, so i created the string and all seems fine now

Fuel Efficiency, eh?

This morning my lovely work van (Renault MegaVan 1.5 D) (Its a piece of crap, the engine has been rebuilt twice, but not my fault, all done prior to my handling of the beast) passed 1000KM on a single tank of fuel. About 625 miles in the old tongue. This is pretty good going i think for a car-van that is almost always half full of kit in the back, and rarely goes under 3500 revs! Picture to follow!

Edit: Picture!

Fuel Efficiency, eh!

Fuel Efficiency, eh!

Im about to give this a whirl. Should be interesting. Half an hour of research has revealed that its not exactly easy to accomplish this but we’ll give it a whirl anyway! :)

Update: OS 9 is pure and total horseshite, as is Outlook 5 for it!

Update: SOLUTION!!!

How to extract email messages from OUtlook Express 5 on Mac OS9
Requirements: Paitence (lots), Entourage 2001, ImapSize (http://www.broobles.com/imapsize/download.php)

Open Entourage 2001 on the Mac, and import your OE profile. Once this is done you can drag the Message folders to the desktop. This will automatically save them into MBOX format. Once this is done. Move the MBOX files to the new machine, and use IMAPSize to convert them to eml messages. Then open Live Mail and import the emails.

Had an interesting job today. I got sent to the wrong place first. I ended up at a water tower, over looking all of Waterford. Nice view. Shame it wasted an hour! :)

I had a nasty encounter with wlctrl32 in aq clients office.

First, Symantec Corporate would not detect the virus. I had to install the trial of PrevX to detect the malware.

once that was done the issue of removal came up.

Luckily someone has had the issue before me, Experts Exchange

The two main applications that helped with this issue were ComboFix and SDFix

In addition to their main download locations (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe, http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) i have added them here: ComboFix and SDFix

To use these, disable System Restore first.

I am not in anyway supporting these tools, however

SDFix:

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.

Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.

  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.

A text file should automatically open.

On ExpertsExchange the expert used this log file to create a script of files and drivers for Combo Fix to remove. I have not yet figured out where they pulled the content from, but here is what they suggest they put into a file called CFScript.txt. This file is then dragged over onto the ComboFix exe. It will try and remove them

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\Jnp57.sy

s
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLCtrl32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nkv2.sys

Driver::
Jnp57
USB2_04

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\micros
oft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\WLCtrl32]

Combo Fix: Disable your AntiVirus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.

Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while it’s running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware.

There is a recommended cleanup method as well after this has been run
Click START then Run…
Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following:
ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
VundoFix backups, if present
The C:\Deckard folder, if present
The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present

Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

This worked first time for me. No issue at all.

One of our clients recently moved offices. Their new offices are impressive to say the least. Some pics below

The view from one of the MD’s Offices:

The main office:

From the outside:

So, what makes up an ideal office.

Obviously a well laid out area is nice, but what else makes somewhere a pleasure to work in?

Some things i didnt like about that place were that the toilet was a floor down, eh, not helpful after a night on the Heineken. Also the water in the kitchen tasted very poorly (quite chemically), also not helping the hangover! Clearly a water cooler could sort that out, but still.

My realistic ideal office would be open plan i suppose, with lots of windows, openable, Air Conditioning is lovely, but the air gets so dry its an annoyance!

But then you have the likes of google: http://www.popgive.com/2008/03/google-office-in-zurich.html

Jealousy doesnt even apply here i am so envious!

Beuracracy eh?

any of you that know me personally know my feeling on Government, Politicians, Beuracracy and the like.

Today i had the brief pleasure of speaking to a member of the ROS tech support(Revenue On Line). Head scratching is the best way of describing it!

If you use ROS there is a Login area. This login area provides you with digital certs, and requires Java and KCrypto. This is all well and good. But if you are in an environment that prohibits the download of JAR’s or other executable programs, then you have a problem. The Revenue, in its infinite wisdom refuses to provide a link to the download of the KCrypto jar. why? fucked if i know to be honest.

The person on the phone had an answer for me.

“Its a third party software, we cannot support it”

Thats fair enough. So provide a disclaimer stating so, AND GIVE ME THE FUCKIN JAR FILE!

After a bit of a google, it seems that ROS and anyone using Unix or MacOS do not get along. Does this mean that those people dont have to pay for such a shit service? Fuck no, i would think the Collector General has his AWStats print out and is desperate to find a way to tax people with an “unknown” Operating System

But i digress. In the end i found the Jar, handily on the ros.ie website, https://www.ros.ie/applets/kcrypto-sun-1.4.jar, thanks to a fellow blogger http://atownley.org/2007/01/ros-vs-linux-making-it-work/

After i had downloaded and put it in the appropriate directory ($JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext) everything worked lovely.

However i did discover something interesting. On the machine i was working on, the D:\ drive was the system drive. It was a HP machine, and a restore using the HP Restore partition did this. No big deal. Except that the ROS site has hard coded into itself to look on the C: drive for the Digital Cert.

I was tempted to tear the phone tech a new place in time. But she was in her late forties. And clearly only in the game for the pension. And the two phone calls a day. Im probably just jealous (Edit: i am fucking jealous, that feckin yoke gets a massive pension, huge benefits, and a lovely salary scale, i get to deal with these kind of feckin eejits!!!!)

Now i did have a thought half an hour later. Why not check the $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext on the original computer and see if there was KCrypto in there! :) Hindsight is 20/20

Yesterday and Today I was tasked with building seven servers. No issue really, just installing the OS (2203 Std and 2003 SBS).

As of right now, one has been completed. And that one needs to have a load of software installed onsite. This is not good.

Why did this happen? Was I unable to complete these installs? Was there something unexpected?

No

The parts and software were either not ordered, ordered seperately or were not delivered to the correct address.

in the words of a great man: What The Fuck?

One particular example. A server with a single 160GB HD. The client ordered server with 2x250GB RAID 0. We ordered the 2 x 250GB seperately. Why? I actually dont know if it is cheaper like this, but even if it is, the man hours alone have made this saving redundant.
